Sustainability has become a major theme in several industries in recent years, and the furniture sector is no exception. As furniture makers and designers, we have a responsibility to contribute to a more sustainable world by applying creative processes and making responsible material choices. In this article, we’re going to show the different ways we professionals use sustainable materials and practices, so you can learn more about the positive impact of sustainable furniture design.

Materials from responsible sources

An important step toward sustainable furniture design is the use of responsibly sourced materials. This includes, for example, choosing wood that comes from sustainably managed forests, with a new one planted for every tree felled. You can also consider alternatives, such as bamboo, which grows quickly and is a renewable resource.

It is also important to consider whether the material comes from far away or close by. For example, there is a lot of solid wood that comes from the Netherlands and thus transportation is minimal. We call this wood native wood, and there are plenty of different species to choose from.

Avoiding toxic substances

Traditional furniture finishes and adhesives often contain toxic substances such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These substances can be harmful to both the health of us furniture makers and the environment. By choosing environmentally friendly finishes and adhesives, such as water-based paints and solvent-free adhesives, you minimize the negative impact on air quality and the ecosystem. Woca provides various oils to finish furniture and is an example of environmentally friendly finishes.

Long service life and timeless design

Sustainable furniture design is not only about the materials and production methods used, but also about designing furniture pieces that will last a long time. Choose timeless designs that are not subject to rapidly changing trends, so you won’t want to replace furniture after a few years. Sustainable design is not only good for the environment, but also for your wallet as a customer. Curious what the secret to timeless design is, read our blog on custom furniture.

Minimizing waste and optimizing material use

Another important part of sustainable furniture design is minimizing waste and optimizing material use during the manufacturing process. This can be achieved through careful planning and the use of efficient cutting techniques to avoid wasting materials.

By working towards a closed-loop system where there is no more waste, we can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of furniture production. We then get creative with leftover materials to reuse them in other furniture pieces or accessories.

In addition, technologies such as CNC and digital design tools play a role in sustainable furniture design. These technologies make it possible to more accurately prepare a piece of furniture which increases the efficiency of the production process, thereby reducing the waste of valuable materials.
